"Use template size for best results"

Tesla's stated range is 512x512 to 1024x1024 pixels, followed by the instruction to use the template size for best results. Those two sentences are doing different jobs. The range is what the car will accept. The template size is what will actually look right.

The wrap image is not a picture of a car — it is a UV atlas, a flat sheet that gets wrapped onto the 3D body geometry. Every pixel maps to a specific point on a specific panel. Upload a 512x512 file and the car still renders it, but it is being stretched to cover the same surface area at a quarter of the pixel density, and hard edges turn to mush on the doors and hood. Upload something that is the right pixel count but the wrong aspect ratio and the mapping shifts: your artwork lands on the wrong panels.

So the practical rule is simpler than the documented one. Open the template for your exact model, work on that canvas at its native size, export at the same size. The 1024x768 Cybertruck contradiction

Here is the detail almost every other guide gets wrong. Tesla's README describes the acceptable range as "512x512 to 1024x1024" — phrasing that reads as square-only. Tesla then ships a Cybertruck template that is 1024x768. It is not square, and 768 is outside the range as commonly read.

We read the dimensions out of the PNG headers of all 12 published templates rather than trusting the prose. 11 of them are 1024x1024. One is not: Cybertruck at 1024x768.

The consequence is concrete. If you build a Cybertruck wrap on a 1024x1024 canvas because a blog post told you Tesla wraps are square, the bottom quarter of your artwork has nowhere to go and everything above it lands on the wrong panels. Cybertruck wraps must be authored at 1024x768.

File size: the 1 MB ceiling

A wrap must be under 1 MB. That sounds generous until you try to export a 1024x1024 photographic PNG, which routinely lands at 1.5-2.5 MB because PNG is lossless and photographs are noisy. Three fixes, in order of how much they cost you visually:

• Quantise the palette. Running the export through pngquant --quality=70-90 typically cuts 60-75% off the file with no visible change. This is the same step we use for image assets on this site.
• Keep the transparent regions transparent. The template's background is fully transparent because it is not paintable geometry. Filling it with a colour adds bytes and paints nothing.
• Simplify. Flat colour, gradients and vector shapes compress to a few tens of kilobytes. Grain, noise overlays and dense photographic texture are what blow the budget.

Filename rules

The filename is validated as strictly as the image. Allowed characters are letters, digits, underscores, dashes and spaces, with a maximum of 30 characters. Everything else — accented letters, emoji, apostrophes, brackets, commas, slashes — is rejected.

What makes this an expensive mistake is that it usually fails silently. The car does not tell you the filename was illegal; the wrap simply is not in the list. The two rules fail independently. Alex's Racing Stripes v2.png breaks only on the apostrophe — at 24 characters the name is comfortably inside the limit. Summer Holiday Roadtrip Stripes 2026.png breaks the other way: every character is legal, but the name is 36 characters. Alex Racing Stripes v2.png satisfies both.

How many wraps fit on the car

Up to 10 wraps uploaded through the Tesla mobile app, and up to 10 more loaded from a USB drive. These are separate pools. A car with 10 app-uploaded wraps will still read 10 from a stick.

This changed on 22 July 2026, when Tesla reworded the README. The previous wording was "10 at a time", which everyone reasonably read as a single combined cap — and which a large amount of still-live third-party content continues to repeat.

Getting the size right without thinking about it
