How Good Is My Microphone?
Analyze your microphone quality with noise and frequency analysis
Microphone Quality
Test Your Mic
How it works
This tool uses the Web Audio API to capture and analyze 5 seconds of microphone input. It creates an AnalyserNode to perform real-time FFT analysis, measuring background noise levels (RMS), frequency response range, signal-to-noise ratio, and audio clipping. The quality score is calculated from these metrics. Audio processing and echo cancellation are disabled to get raw microphone data. All analysis runs locally in your browser — no audio is recorded or transmitted.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is microphone quality scored?
The quality score is based on multiple factors: background noise level (signal-to-noise ratio), frequency response (how well it captures low and high frequencies), dynamic range, and consistency. These are measured by analyzing a short audio sample from your microphone.
What is a good microphone quality score?
A score of 80-100 indicates excellent quality suitable for professional calls and recording. 60-79 is good for everyday video calls. 40-59 is acceptable but may have noticeable background noise or limited range. Below 40 suggests issues that should be addressed.
How can I improve my microphone quality?
Move closer to the microphone, reduce background noise (close windows, turn off fans), use a pop filter for plosive sounds, speak at a consistent volume, and consider upgrading to a dedicated USB microphone if using a built-in laptop mic.
What is background noise level?
Background noise is any sound captured when you're not speaking — ambient room noise, fan hum, electrical interference, etc. Lower background noise means cleaner audio. The tool measures this during silent periods of your recording.
What does 'good for calls' mean?
The 'good for calls' rating evaluates whether your microphone quality is sufficient for video conferencing and voice calls. It considers background noise, volume level, and frequency response — the key factors that affect whether people on the other end can hear you clearly.
